お茶濁る春

　Twitterで不良金融マンから煽られてblogを更新してなかったことを思い出したので、とりあえず去年の8月に都営大江戸線の車中で書きなぐってケータイからmixi日記にアップしたものを貼ってお茶を濁しておくことにしてみます。

晩夏の朝。玄関先で蚊を二匹殺す。殺す。
その僕が、親父を殺そうとしている。
歩道の傍らに蝉の骸が転がる哀れ。
じんわりと汗がにじんでくる。
50日前に入院した父は、幾度かの劇的快復と低迷を繰り返し、十数本のチューブでもって命をつないでいる。
生命維持装置。
1日に1000mlの栄養液を与えられ、同じ量のお小水を抜き取られ、父は生きている。いや、生命を維持させられている。
意識は浮かび上がり、混濁し、週に一度面会に行く時には辛うじて目に力が宿り時に手を握り返してくるが、気道に挿入されたチューブにより声を発する事は叶わず、遂に意思を疎通させることはできなかった。
それでも長年連れ添った母には唇が読み取れるらしく、「頑張るから」という意気込みもあったとは聞く。
ここ数日は体力の衰えも激しく、見るからに辛そうな表情で手を振りほどくような有り様だったというが、遂に昨日、医師から生命維持装置を外すかどうするか家族で話し合うように言われたのだという。
訥々と語る母の言葉にやがて若い頃の思い出話が混じり、涙声になる。
老いた母には厳しすぎる選択だ。
「意識があるうちはそんな事はしないようにしよう」
そんなこととは、つまり、死を意味する。

都営地下鉄の中で黙考。
思い出は走馬灯のようにとはよく言うが、生き残る側でもそうなのだからベッドにへばりついたままの50日ではいかほどばかりだったのだろうか。
思い出はアトランダムに駆け巡る。
大泉学園北口のおもちゃ屋のアイスの台の下の暗がりから、ピィピィと鳴く小雀を拾って帰って来たのは30数年前の初夏だったか。
弱りきった雛に炊いた粟を口移しで食べさせてようやく元気になり、部屋の中をチチチチと飛び回れるようになってからは、僕の頭の上に止まって休むのがお気に入りだった。
ある夏の日の昼下がり、午後出勤の父が「行ってくるぞ」とテレビに向かって座る僕の頭をガシッと撫でた時に雀の子は事切れた。
父の大きな手。
「お父さんなんて大嫌いだ！」泣き叫ぶ僕に対しどうしようもなく済まなそうにしていた父は、ちょうど今の僕の年齢くらいだったのではないか。
本当に困ってしまったのだろうなと、この巡り合わせになってはじめて気づく。
見舞いの時にマッサージしていた父の手は相変わらず大きかった。
白くぶよぶよとむくんでしまった手が、一時間の面会時間の間の母のマッサージによって元の無骨な手に戻っていったのが、ここ50日間の日常だった。

西武池袋線。
一駅一駅近づく度に選択の時も近づく。
準急なんかに乗ってしまったものだから気分的にはちょっと苦々しくなってしまう。
劇的に快復方向に転んでくれてやしないかしら、なんて事を考えたりもする。

もう幾度目の復活かわからないが、医師から「ここのところの状態からすると奇跡的なんですが、あと何日かは持つかも」と説明があった。
母、兄とともにこの52日間の経緯を伺い、「無理な延命策は取らない」という方針にサイン捺印をしてきて今。
まぁあと数日のようです。
若いときに患った結核で片肺になり、よくぞもってくれたなぁ。
7年もの入院生活で級友たちと大学にも行けず、遅れて大学へ入学するために上京してきてからこのかた、進駐軍相手のテーラーの経営で財をなしたかと思えば、数年にして海千山千の華僑・リーさんに乗っ取られ(今も原宿の交差点に●●●●●●●●として残っている)、アメ車一台を残しすってんてんになって●●●にもぐり込み、社主一族と掛け合って法外な給料を取り、二人の子供をそれなりに育て、引退し余裕も出来やっと趣味の旅行三昧……と期待していた矢先にまたも病に倒れ。
思い通りにはいかない来し方だったのかもしれないが、孫の顔を見る時だけはこの上なく満足そうだったのが印象的だ。

という事で今日の日本酒の会に向かうのでした。
