エムズシステムの波動スピーカーの秘密

なにかとお世話になっている高野さん（ベストセラーになった「リッツ・カールトンが大切にするサービスを超える瞬間」の著者の方）から声をかけていただいて新富町にあるエムズシステムさんに伺う。
参加したのはいつものノブさん、前職で同期だったK＠Dドットコム、そして元JALのというよりもコンサドーレ札幌の立役者というほうが有名な濱田翼さんもいらした。
ご無沙汰のメンツである。
それになんとはなしに仕事とも関連がありそうなのだよな。（謎）

実は実は、このエムズシステムというのはかなり前々から気になっていたスピーカーシステムなのだ。

たった一つの円筒形のスピーカーから驚くような臨場感あふれるサウンドが響く…　という説明だけは色々と聞いていたわけでして。

5人椅子に座って麦茶を飲みながらしばし待つ。
するとカーテンの向こうからやけに臨場感のあるギターが響く。
ん？
これか…
いや、ギターではなくウクレレか？　巧すぎる。
カーテンの向こう側には確かになにかいる気配がするし、素晴らしい響きの音が聴こえてくるのだが、さりとてそんなに広い空間があるわけは無いことだけはビルの外観からしても容易に想像がつく。
ということはつまり、これは例のスピーカーから出て来た音なのかな。

案の定、カーテンを開けてみるとエムズシステムの波動スピーカーMS1001（上の写真のやつね）が鳴っていた。
掛かっていたCDはやはりジェイクだった。
濱田さんが見出して日本に紹介したという超絶テクニシャンを持つウクレレ奏者のジェイク・シマブクロである。
三浦氏にお話を聞く。
どうやら高野さんの著書を読んだ三浦さんが「リッツカールトンの素晴らしさは理解しました。ただ、ひとつだけ足りないものがあります。それは音です」という熱い手紙を送ったのがご縁なのだそうな。
早速試聴に来た高野さんは2セット購入して家で使っているのだという。

色々な音源を聴きながら、他のスピーカーセットと較べながらお話を伺う。
ふむふむふむ。
ふむふむ。
ふむ。

要はあれかな。
人間の外耳は180度外を向いて付いているってことかな。（はしょりすぎ）
追記：今さら読み返してみてわかりづらかったみたいですので違う書き方をすると「音叉同士が共鳴するように、スピーカーと頭蓋骨が共鳴するようにしてあれば方向は問わずにステレオ感はでてくるんじゃねーの？」ということです。

もとい。
エムズシステムのサイトの説明にはこのように書いてある。

既存の概念では、スピーカーといえば、ライト、レフトの２つスピーカーが必要でした。
左右の音をバランスよく聞くためには、最適なリスニングポジションを選ぶ必要があり、左右のスピーカーから出る音がぶつかる場所が一番よい場所とされ、そのポイントは一箇所に限定されていました。

驚くべきことに、エムズシステムのスピーカーはたった1本であたかもそこで演奏家が生演奏で演奏してくれるような音を再現してくれますので、目の前にあらわれたコンサートステージ上の演奏をいろいろな位置から聴くかのごとく、限定されたポジションなく、好きなときに好きな場所で聞くことができるのです。
空間全体が音に満たされますので、耳だけではなく、からだ全体で音を感じ、ライブ感あふれる豊かな音に包み込まれる至福の感動を味わっていただけます。

説明の通り、聴いてみると確かに部屋中どこにいても音場は一点に感じられ、ピアノソロなどはあたかもその「場所」で鳴り響いているように聞こえる。
また、録音さえしっかりとしていれば四重奏はどこでチェロが鳴っているのかも手に取るように判ってしまう。

これはうむ、確かにすごい。

だって、今聴いてるスピーカーって126,000円だぜ？
アンプはONKYOの4万くらいのミニコンポに直繋ぎだ。
以前松本隆さんのお宅に伺って3,000万円のオーディオセットを拝聴したことがあるが、それと較べてしまっては確かに高音域の解像度は低い。当たり前の話。
だが200分の一以下の金額で、たった3kgの軽さでこの臨場感が達成できるなんてのはちょっと尋常ではない。
部屋中をうろつきまわって確認してみても、確かにうたい文句どおり、ステレオ感、臨場感が得られるリスニングポイントがあきれるほどに広い。これも驚きだ。
音場のスイートスポット的に言ってもBOSEの甘っちょろいEQなんて目じゃないかもしれない。
鮎川純太さんちの1,000万のオーディオセットよりはるかに臨場感がある。体の向きを変えて料理作りながら聴いてるとのっぺりとしてしまってたし。

しばし考える。

そして理解したつもりになった。
（ここで前述のはしょりんぐに戻る）

例えば。
バイノーラル録音の音源をヘッドフォンで聴くと非常に優れた臨場感を得ることができるとされている。大昔、FMでラジオドラマを作ったときにそんな遊びをしたこともある。

逆に、だ。
音の出力の部分を考えてみる。

「音を聴く」のは必ずや人間である。
つまり、「聴く本人」の「感覚器官」であるところの頭部の形状は、大体がとこ決まっている。
外耳はおおよそ20cmの距離を隔てて180度外に向かっているのだ。

では音の出口をそれに相似形にしてやるというのはどうだろうか？
それがエムズシステムなんじゃなかろーか？
ではそうすることによってなぜ音場のスイートスポットが広くなりうるのか？

たとえば。
どんな部屋であってもその部屋なりの「鳴り」が存在する。
洞窟のような響きもあり、天井の高い協会のような響きもあり、スクウェアな木質壁面に壁紙を貼った一般の居室のような響きもあり。
そしてその「鳴り」のパターンは実は記憶の中にさまざまなシチュエーションとしてマッピングされている。（でなければ目の不自由な方が音だけで周囲の状況を把握できるわけが無い）

部屋のどの場所に円筒形スピーカーが転がっているのかはいざ知らず、部屋に立つなり「この部屋だとこの鳴りパターンだよね」という暗黙知からによる脳内での音場の想起は割りとたやすいのではないだろうか。

あー、なんか群論とか使うと判りやすく説明できそうな気がしてきた。ラプラス変換でもいいか。
例えば、自然音源 n に対して部屋の固有の「鳴り」を　H(n) とする。（ホロニックのHね。部屋のHにあらず）
原音を直接聴覚神経にぶち込むわけがないのだから、人間が耳にすることが出来るのは H(n) でしかない。
そしてその H や、他の部屋やホールで感じることの出来る H1 や H2 は、その場に立っていればおのずと想起されるものなのだ、としたら。

なんとなれば、一番初めにカーテン越しにエムズシステムの音を聴いたときに
まず音だけだったら
「小ぶりのホール」「木の感じがする」「天井は高め」「奥の壁までも3メートル以上ある」「椅子に座っている」
という H(n) が想像できたのだが、
逆にビルに入るときに得た知識では
「いやいやそんなに奥行きのあるビルではない」「天井高はこの部屋とそう違うわけが無い」「構造体はコンクリでしょ」
という風に違和感がありまくりだったからである。

まとめてみると、

n という音場を聴く際には、必ずその部屋なりの H(n) という変換がなされるはず
音を出力する際に、 H'(n) という変換をかけておけば、人間の耳に届く際に H'(n)→n という変換がなされるのではないか
「楕円の一方の焦点から光なり音が出力されれば、たとえそれがどの方向に出力されたものであっても、もう一方の焦点に確実かつ高効率で届く」のと同様に、
頭部を模した出力システムで音を出力しさえすれば、同じような鳴りの構造を持つ人間の頭部でも「どの方向を向いていたとしても高効率で受け取ることができる」のではないか

というところか。
　※精確に言えば、円筒の中心線上に立つとステレオ感はかなり損なわれてしまう

また、エムズシステムのスピーカーたちが幅200mmもしくは400mmになっているというのは、外耳の幅の整数倍だからではないだろうか？　違うのか？
さらに言えば、人間の頭部を模したスピーカーを作って鼓膜に相当する部分にスピーカーユニットを配置してみるというのはどうだろう？　もっとよくなるんじゃねの？
もちろん顔はあっち向きに配置するのだ。目や鼻、口といった頭蓋骨の響き抜けがおきそうな部分はそれなりに抜いておけばよい。
イヤ待てよ、頭部の形状を「鳴り」からみて計算してスピーカーを形作るのは予期せぬこもりが生じそうだから、やはり円筒形というのはいいのかもしれない。

…などと考えながらスピーカーをじろじろと眺めてみたら、やはり裏手に穴があいていた。
これが目とか鼻といった頭部前方の抜けなのかなぁ。

面白かったので購入することにする。
家のスピーカーシステムをどうするかだなぁ…
二店目に導入するってことにするか？
いや、イベントのときに使ってみるか…

とかとか。

帰り際、濱田さんのオフィスにちょっとだけ立ち寄って解散。
みんな仕事があるので三々五々解散する。
あー面白かった。

こんにちは。
先日、念願の波動スピーカーを試聴してきました。
試聴用に持って行ったのは、ジャズ・ギターとウッドベースのデュオ。
ギターの音はなかなかリアル。しかし、音像が小さい。ミニチュアのギターが鳴っている感じ（ボリュームどうこうの問題ではない）。
ベースは全然駄目。弦が指板に当たる音が聞こえる程度で、ボリュームを上げるとコーン紙が一杯一杯に振幅していて、飽和状態。
低音の量感は無理。
よって、目の前でプレイヤーが実際に弾いている感じ…は到底無理だったのです。
これが、軽いシンセがフワ〜と鳴っているだけの癒し音楽だったら何ら問題はなかったかも知れませんが、そんな音楽ばかり聞く訳ではない…。

うーん、聞いてみないと分からないとは思いますが、波動スピーカーの説明って理論的なことどこにも載っていないんですよね。タイムドメインなんかは細かく出すことを追求しても意味が無い、というような分かりやすいメッセージがあるんですが、こっちはタモリ倶楽部で紹介された塩ビ管スピーカーと変わりない気がしますね。それでいい音が出るんだからいいんですけどね。大きい音で聞かないとか、パワーとかスケールを求めないということが前提であれば理解できますが、3000万よりは良くないけど、1000万よりはいいと言われても、「？」という感じですね。

　いつの間にやら二つもコメントがついてたんですね。（汗）

　まとめて書いてみますと、「波動スピーカーの方が1000万のシステムより良い」とか全然言うつもりはありません。そう読めたらすみませんでした。
　いうべき部分は「ステレオ感を得られる範囲がえらく広い」という意味になります。
　3000万円のシステムの方は部屋全体が「そのため」のしつらえでしたので別の話になりますが、通常の部屋に頑張って数百万円単位のシステムを置いてもシビアな事になってしまうのと比べると非常に気楽に楽しめるのは確かです。（モニター用として考えて見れば別ですよね。きっと1000万のスピーカーの前でしっかりとしたリスニングポジションを取ったほうがよい音が得られるでしょう）
　オカルト趣味は全然ありませんので塩ビ管スピーカーもベニヤ板工作もいいと思いますが、手軽さという意味ではいいんじゃないでしょうか。
※でも塩ビ管スピーカーを自作するとしたら、まず自分の両耳の間隔の整数倍で作ってみるとは思いますが。（ここだけは若干オカルトちっくｗ）
