銀座の死闘

日曜日の銀座、17時過ぎ。
有楽町マリオンの一階でクラブオンカードの切り替え手続きを待っている時にそれは起こった。

40絡みの黒っぽい服を着た女性が、もう一人痩せた小柄な女性の片腕をしっかと抱きしめるようにしながら、エスカレーターの脇で気のなさそうにチラシを配っていた男性店員の方向へ足音高く進んでいったのが見えたのだった。

彼女らが僕のすぐ脇を通りすぎる時になんだか微妙な雰囲気がした。もう数年来味わったことのないようなひりつくような塊が通り過ぎたのだ。
誰かが必死に、本当に必死にもがいている、というオーラ。

はじめは急に具合が悪くなった友達を介抱しているのかとも思ったが、それは一瞬で誤解だと見て取れた。
脇の下に押さえつけられた腕から抜けようともがいている小柄な女性の動きもまた必死だったからだ。
まるで太った女郎蜘蛛の罠にかかった紋白蝶といったら例え話がすぎるかもしれない。

黒っぽいアンサンブルを着た女性が男性店員に押し殺したような声でなにやら告げる。
「万引きです」もしくは「掏摸です」だったのだろうか。
繁忙時のデパートの入り口付近にはさまざまな音がうっすらと滞っていて詳しい言葉までは聞き取れなかったが、こちらから見ることが出来た男性店員の顔色からその言葉の内容は何となく分かる。

白い半袖のシャツブラウスを着た小柄な女性が一際もがくと、小さなバッグから三段式の小さな折り畳み傘が転げ落ちた。
思わずそれに一瞬反応した小太りの女性の隙を見て、ブラウスの女性が身をひねりこちらへと駆けようとしたが、すぐに後ろから腰を抱えられてしまい、静かにその奮闘は終わることとなった。

周囲ではその奮闘に気づき、気圧された数人が顔色もなく突っ立っていた。偶然にもストーンヘンジのように見事に円弧を描き、傍から見ればスタンディングオベーションでもしかねないような立ち位置だった。
だがほとんどの人はこの静かすぎる死闘に気づくこともなく、往来に立ちすくむ僕らに荷物がぶつかりそうになって軽く舌打ちなどしている。
平和に今日の晩飯の相談などしながら。

僕はというと、ブラウスの女性がこちらに走ってこようとするのを見て思わず身体が反応してしまい、タックル前の前傾姿勢で夕暮れどきのデパートの入り口で突っ立っている羽目に陥っていた。
これはダサイ。
ゆっくりと体勢をもどしながら見ていると、先程までの必死のオーラの抜け殻のようになり男性店員に抱えられバックヤードに引きずられるようにして去っていく万引き女性は、最後のひともがきの時にどうやら失禁してしまったらしく、コットンパンツの太ももの半ばくらいまでじんわりと黒っぽいシミが広がって行くのが見えた。

人って、興奮すると失禁してしまうもんなんだ。
知識では分かってはいたが、どうやら本当にそういうものらしい。

彼らが奥へと消えたあとには数秒で平和な雑踏が甦り、僕も用事が終わったのですぐさま家路へと急ぐ。
誰かにとってはそれこそ陽の明るい銀座の人前で失禁するほどの一大事であっても、すぐ横にいた筈の誰かには全く気取られることもなく粛々と事態は進んでいく。
賑やかできらびやかな銀座の喧騒と、静かなる死闘とのコントラスト。次元の隙間とも思えるその二者の乖離っぷりは、なにやら一種神聖な儀式のようだった。
誰かの大事件と誰かの日常とはごくごくすんなりと共存していて、海面深度によって同じ海域でも全く別の魚の生態系が成り立っているかのようだ。
あるいは電波や光が波長の差違で混信しないように。

街は時折事件という形をもって、プリズムが光の波長を分解するように普段は気づかない他人の思いや死闘を色鮮やかに見せてくれることがあるらしい。
今日は偶々そういった「プリズムの出現にまみえた」というだけで、世の中は日々連綿と沢山の事件にまみれて白く光っているのだろう。
できれば楽しい事件や思いに立ち合いたいのはやまやまだが、こればっかりはそう言ってはいられない。まぁ自分が楽しい思いを振りまいていれば少なくとも確率は上がっていくのだろう。

そんなこんなで帰り際に木村屋総本店でチョココロネと焼きカレーパンとビーフカレーパンを買って帰ってきたのでした。
我々はエコ乃ちゃんの中の人なのでチョココロネはなくてはならないのだな。うむ。
